Buying equipment online, over the sea is very risky as this is where you lose most of the money. Under a mini (or compact) excavator we understand tracked digging machine weighing up to about 10 tons – the ISO 6165 classification covers machinery from tiny machines weighing under 1 ton up to small 7-10 ton excavators (ISO 6165). It is easy to like excavators but hard to verify one from a photo. The hour meter can be wound back. A center hydraulic pivot can weep oil that a single jobsite picture never shows, and an ex-auction unit can arrive with no service history at all.
Our company, Liehuang, bridges the gap: we buy only major brands in China, check each unit, make required refurbishments and give you pictures of machine’s tag, hour meter and a video of cold start, before receiving the balance. You’ll benefit from Chinese prices without dealing with Chinese unknown quality.

Equipment Lifespan & Engineering
Remember – brand-new machines are carelessly categorized as the safest purchase. This isn’t always true – and it costs dearly in this level. Concern for for a used Kubota or Cat package over a no-name brand isn’t about patriotism but dependability and parts. (Also dispel one more myth: despite popular thought that thicker steel is always better, a thoughtfully built machine puts the correct-thickness at the stress points – a svelte 2-ton can win out against a heavy but errant one .)
A true high quality mini excavator is designed for 8,000-10,000 hours, with the initial 4,000-5,000 hours usually spared from large overhauls; a lesser machine “might run OK for 1,000 hours, but parts availability often makes it dead long before the engine expires” (see also EPA engine-family rules below). A proven 2024-2025 hydraulic excavator design reveals the engineering work contained in a blue-chip machine with a Caterpillar or Kubota badge (USPTO US12264451B2, granted 2025)depth a budget copy rarely approaches.
| Factor | Used major-brand (Liehuang) | New Chinese-budget unit |
|---|---|---|
| Engine | Genuine Kubota / Yanmar / Cat diesel | RATO / B&S / copy engine |
| Design service life | 8,000–10,000 hr | ~1,000 hr before parts-obsolescence |
| Parts availability | Order by OEM part no., worldwide | Fabricate / substitute (forum-reported) |
| Hours at purchase | Typically 2,000–5,000 (within overhaul-free band) | 0 (new) |
| Used-market demand share | Cat 24.3% / Bobcat 20% / Kubota 16.2% | Negligible used resale |
| Resale / residual value | Holds value; documented cert helps | Steep depreciation |
| Emissions certification | EPA Tier 4 / EU Stage V genuine | Varies; may fail import |
Market Demand & Resale Value
Used-equipment demand share numbers come from the most recent market-pulse data on financed sales. Whatever market-researchers might say, there’s no ambiguity coming directly from used-equipment buyers: “Deere and Hitachi minis are absolutely bulletproof” according to the real owners themselves, and even a buyer hunting new Chinese iron admits “at that price I’d just buy a Bobcat with a couple thousand hours” .
THAT is the precise used equipment machine we deliver: a used, brand-name machine with a few thousand hours, fully inspected. We won’t lie; no used machine is “perfect” but a “couple thousand hours in exchange for parts availability, resale value and complete documentation” is an honest exchange that always saves. We will not claim every used machine is flawless; that honest trade-off — a few thousand proven hours for worldwide parts support — comes without compromising the documentation that protects you.

Inspection Protocol
“We do not buy on price alone. A machine with a worn swing bearing or a weeping center pivot looks cheap on the invoice and expensive on the second job, so a unit that fails our hydraulic and undercarriage checks gets rejected at source, before it ever reaches a container.”
Liehuang Equipment Inspection Team
Our Used Mini Excavator Inventory: Brands & Tonnage Classes (0–10 Ton)
The risk of machinery being “out of order” due to missing parts is the quickest way to turn your cost savings on import into zero. Our warehouses hold parts for 9 major brands for a very practical reason: parts availability determines the lifespan of a mini excavator on a construction site, not the initial price tag. Reliable Kubota, Caterpillar, Komatsu, Volvo, Hyundai, Doosan, Hitachi, Kobelco, Takeuchi and SANY machinery guarantee availability of such parts as a hose, filter kit, seal kit, travel drive, or rubber track, which can be purchased with OEM part number anywhere in the world. This is where low-priced unbranded Chinese machines lose, owners report that “repairs often involve fabrication or swapping in something you can get parts for”. Each of our excavator units has been carefully selected from Chinese second-hand market and passed through an inspection at the Liehuang facility before being posted online. As a result, the real risk – a machine that breaks on the second day of operation – is detected and eliminated at the stage of the selection process, rather than after you receive it at the port. Unlike machinery purchased at an auction or in a “blind” online marketplace, the used compact excavator that you purchase from us has already been carefully inspected and tested in our workshop.
9-Brand Used Mini Excavator Sourcing Map
This is our named sourcing reference, which brands we stock in each tonnage band, the engine you can expect, and where genuine parts come from. Operating-weight ranges are the published brand envelopes for the mini/compact line.

5-Class Tonnage Selection Matrix (0–10 Ton)
Then match the brand – tight to match the size class before you match the brand. The 3-4 ton class is the sweet-spot for contractors and the most-stocked size in rental fleets ; true micro units shrink to a less-than-three-foot width able to migrate through a gate for interior work and backyard projects. Across this wide selection of mini excavators — every machine a genuine-brand digger with a real diesel engine, not a budget clone — it is that engine and hydraulic package that gives a mini excavator its versatility on the job site.
| Class | Operating weight | Dig depth | Transport width | Best-fit jobs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Micro (<1 t) | ~2,000 lb | ~5 ft | 28–32 in | Indoor demo, basements, plumbing repair |
| 1–2 t | 2,000–4,400 lb | 5–6 ft | 28–36 in | Utility trenching, cemetery, greenhouse |
| 3–4 t (sweet spot) | 6,600–8,800 lb | 8–10 ft | 4–5 ft | Water/sewer/gas, pool, septic, grading |
| 5–6 t | 11,000–13,200 lb | 11–13 ft | 5–6 ft | Commercial site work, drainage, foundations |
| 6–10 t (small) | 13,200–22,000 lb | 13–15 ft | 6.5–7.5 ft | Heavier digging, utility mains, demolition |
Engineering Note, what we actually check on the working group
Each machine is shipped with its genuine attachment hardware confirmed: bucket, hydraulic thumb, auger or quick hitch; and auxiliary hydraulics plumbed and tested for the thumb and breaker circuits. We inspect boom swing, (offset boom) feature, joystick response, pilot-control fidelity, rubber track condition, and cab options – heater, air-conditioning (AC), canopy or enclosed cab – against the ad. Confirm the thumb circuit especially: the standard excavator-thumb ratio control design keeps the thumb cylinder held at a steady and reduced close pressure even when not actuated (USPTO US6385870B1) so a good thumb should clamp and hold, not drift.
Think about the spec sheet – whether you want a sub-1-ton micro for interior work, a Bobcat E10 class machine for tight access, or a 6-10 ton Yanmar- or Kubota- diesel powered heavy-duty machine for utility mains – because the spec sheet describes the exact machine, hour meter and serial plate photographed, so a request for quote maps precisely to real iron, not a stock photo. Because we’re the direct seller and exporter, not an auction-hammer supply-chain aggregator, we guarantee that this mini excavator make it on your site after we deploy it to you.
How We Inspect, Refurbish & Test Every Machine
6-Point Pre-Export Inspection Stack
| Step | Inspection point | What we verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Engine & hours | Cold-start video, hour-meter photo, oil/coolant, magnetic plug check | Confirms real hours; metal on the plug “gets expensive fast” |
| 2 | Hydraulic system | Cylinder rods (scoring/leaks), hoses, pressure/function test warm | Catches the cold-good / hot-fade failure |
| 3 | Undercarriage | Track tension, rollers, idlers, sprockets, pad wear | Up to 50% of maintenance cost; uneven wear = neglect |
| 4 | Swing bearing & center pivot | Bucket-rock test (<1 ft play); center hydraulic pivot for leaks | Center-pivot repair is “a major job and very costly” |
| 5 | Structure & pins | Boom/arm/bucket pins & bushings for slop; weld/crack check | Slop = worn linkage, hidden rebuild cost |
| 6 | Function & compliance | All circuits, attachments, EPA/CE plate, serial-to-docs match | Confirms the machine = the paperwork |

Buying an incorrect size machine – in particular with 0-10-ton mini-excavators – is almost invariably a more expensive mistake than buying an incorrect brand. We tip when on the job because of incorrect tonnage not the logo on the hood. The 0-10 ton mini excavator can do many jobs a standard machine just can’t do because it fits in extremely tight confines in commercial, urban-focused applications such as new construction or small commercial building, residential, apartment work, grading & excavation for small commercial, landscape projects, property management & acreage owners, underground & utility work including sewer and pipeline, some demo & land clearing, and small rural development.
From 6-10 tons we jump into a Small Excavator range which we believe to offer up to twice the capability of machines just below that weight in digging, power and bucket range for general contracting work. Anything below 6 tons becomes focused on confined space or a lighter load task. With the 3-4 ton “contractor-best” class being the dominant size class in the rental industry, the number of available options on our yard in the lower range of our weight bands has exploded as well – see our 5-Class Tonnage Selection Matrix above.
Buy the machine your market can register
It would be prudent for you to check the emissions standard for non-road diesel used in your country before selection, because any equipment that perfect on paper and non-compliant to the emissions standard will lead to unnecessary costs at customs. You may state the exact port and what the usage will be and we’ll suggest and select compatible equipment.
If you compare us with domestic suppliers based in the US that only ship within USA, we prepare orders based on what you’ll need – voltages, usage area, attachment parts your market normally uses, and the emission level the customs authority demand in your country. Because we’ve a history of preparing orders exclusively for overseas markets, the machinery we provide starts working right from the first day as against machinery which stays at the port.
Buying Used Mini Excavators from China: Price, Inspection, Shipping & Import
Very often the first-time buyer faces loss due to the total cost calculation. The amount you’ll see in the bill isn’t final and in addition to that there could be delays due to improper documents that will require up to 5%-10% on storage and other similar fees. Reports suggest that the total landed cost of machinery will roughly be 20%-35% over the FOB amount as you include shipping, insurance and other fees like custom duty/tariffs. In other words, as opposed to suppliers that quote a flat FOB amount, we show the detailed breakdown for everything involved so there are no additional cost surprise. Excavators import under HTS code 8429.52.10.00 at 0% standard US duty, though additional tariffs can apply by trade policy (USITC Harmonized Tariff Schedule), and a diesel machine must carry valid EPA/EU emission certification to clear (EPA).
40HQ Container Load Table
Economy of scale in shipping implies that when you consolidate a few (2-4) mini excavators in a 40-foot high-cube container (the quantity depends on size/weight), you cut down on your shipping costs significantly as opposed to dealers/fleet buyers purchasing a single piece of machinery.
| Machine class | Units / 40HQ | Indicative Freight | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Micro–2 t | 3–4 | $2,500–5,000 total | Dealers stocking light units |
| 3–4 t | 2–3 | $2,500–5,000 total | Contractor / rental fleet mix |
| 5–6 t | 2 | $2,500–5,000 total | Heavier site-work buyers |
| 6–10 t | 1–2 | $2,500–5,000 total | Single high-value units (or LCL) |
The prices for transportation mentioned are estimated costs that have been derived from market trends for the US market; transit through west coast ports would be cheaper than transit through east coast. Request a CIF quote tailored to the port you plan to ship to.
Order flow & payment that protects you
Our standard flow is RFQ → machine shortlist → inspection report and video → deposit → balance once you approve → CIF shipping with documents and customs support. We use the payment terms experienced importers rely on: a deposit first, the bulk after inspection, and the final portion after delivery. We recommend insuring 130–150% of your CIF value rather than just the FOB price. Third-party inspection (SGS, BV, TÜV, Intertek) is welcome on any order; our team will help you arrange it.
After the deal is done, genuine major-brand spare parts become your “quiet” bonus – filters, seals, travel motors, rubber tracks can always be ordered from our OEM parts catalogue by number, making it easy to service a machine nearly 8,000 miles away. Direct import financing for a mini excavator is buyer-arranged, although the China cost basis normally means a direct purchase is more cost-effective for fleet owners than comparable local offerings.
Certifications, Emissions & Export Compliance (CE / EPA Tier 4 / EU Stage V)
A non-compliant engine won’t even be warned before it fails at the border, rejected and may ship back on your cost – since customs regard a specified emission tier as a definitive yes or no gate. Emission compliance is the single greatest reason that a used machine fails inspection on entry into any territory – therefore Liehuang regards a machine’s engine tier as a decisive gate specification and not a footnote. Unlike a domestic seller, who has no exposure past his own market, we’ve confirmed the emission tier of a specific unit before it has even been allocated to your order. For the US, nonroad diesel emissions are governed by EPA Tier 4 regulations and apply to engine technology that use advanced engine controls paired with Ultra-Low-Sulfur Diesel with fuel that has sulfur content no greater than 15 ppm as per 40 CFR parts 1039, 1065, 1068 (EPA). For the EU, nonroad engine emission are governed by EU Stage V (Regulation (EU) 2016/1628). EU Stage V imposes the use of diesel particulate filters for nonroad engines in the power range 19-560kW. When a machine is to be sold to the European Economic Area (EEA), CE marking and a Declaration of Conformity according to the EU’s Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC also have to be added.
Each machine’s compliance plate will be confirmed and documented as part of the inspection process and relevant certification, plus serial paperwork will be included in the export file. A machine’s compliant tag or plating on an engine/machine contributes to an increased cross-border resale value – a documented machine commands a price premium over it’s non-compliant equivalent.

Frequently Asked Questions
Machine prices range greatly depending on brand, hours and ton, but when comparing, always consider it from a landed cost perspective and not just the sticker price. Aim for about 20-35% more than the FOB machine price to include freight, duties, insurance, customs, and clearance costs. A real brand unit which still falls within its overhaul-free working band (i.e. less than 5000 hrs) might represent a significant upfront purchase relative to some no-name new or surplus machine, but you’ll typically still see major savings over it’s life span of 8000-10,000 hours. Specify a class and country for a CIF quote and we’ll provide real-time pricing and costs.
It’s the wrong question for our inventory. We don’t sell new no-name Chinese-brand machines; we sell used major-brand excavators (Kubota, Cat, Komatsu, Hitachi and more) that happen to be sourced and inspected in China. It’s a myth that “all Chinese excavators are high quality and reliable” — that claim is simply false, and on cheap new imports parts can mean fabrication, but none of that applies when the machine is a genuine Kubota or Caterpillar you can get OEM parts for anywhere.
A good mini excavator is built to last for anywhere from 8,000 to 10,000 working hours (under typical working conditions and with routine maintenance). Most real brands only need substantial overhauls in the latter part of their service life, somewhere between 4,000-5,000 hours. For these reasons, we generally favor genuine major-brand units with low- to mid- range hours versus those at the rock bottom price.
Cheap usually means a copy engine and a thin parts supply. A unit may run fine for 1,000 hours and then become uneconomic to repair because parts aren’t available, and the saving disappears on the second breakdown. That’s the case for buying inspected genuine iron instead.
Each machine receives a serialized, PIN-locked report. You’ll have this before your final balance is paid.
- hour-meter photo
- cold-start video
- full walkaround
- hydraulic and undercarriage measurements
- center-pivot and swing-bearing inspection
- EPA / CE compliance plate
If it’s an occasional job then local rental is best. But for someone (whether a contractor, a dealer or a fleet operating equipment) who regularly operates the machine on behalf of someone else, or who resells into a market, owning an inspected used unit is much more cost-effective than hiring once you factor in the hour cost, plus you maintain control over the availability of the equipment, rather than competing for a rental fleet – the bulk of our buyers are importers and dealers buying to own and resell.
Importing doesn’t require an operator license, but the machine needs valid emission certification, EPA Tier 4 for the US, or EU Stage V plus CE for Europe, and correct customs paperwork under HS code 8429.52. We supply the compliance and serial paperwork so your broker can clear it cleanly.
Flow: RFQ → shortlist → inspection report and video → deposit → balance on approval → CIF shipping → documents. You can load 2–4 machines per 40-ft container to cut per-unit freight, or ship a single unit by LCL. We support your preferred third-party inspector (SGS / BV / TÜV) and recommend insuring 130–150% of total landed cost.
This is the main reason to purchase major-brand. All filters, seals, travel motors, rubber tracks and wear parts are ordered with original OEM part number by the global dealer network, so even a machine in the other half of the world remains operational. Additionally, we provide the serial and model information you need to order the correct part the first time.
Used excavator buyers need more than a product photo. Liehuang uses a staged payment workflow: deposit to reserve the machine, inspection evidence before balance, and export documents plus shipment tracking before release.
