The Real Risk in Buying a Used Hitachi Excavator Isn't the Machine — It's the Seller
A Hitachi excavator is, of course, an excavator, specifically the Hitachi ZAXIS series crawler hydraulic excavator which, for a generation now, has represented good engineering in terms of fuel efficiency, durability and its signature HIOS hydraulic system. You already know that, the risk is that it has 2,000 hours showing and 4,000 working hours hidden. It is a very real risk and we have been approached more than once by buyers whose imported "bargain" ended up costing twice its purchase price in parts, labor and waiting times, if it even made it off the boat.
That's a story every experienced importer knows. From wind back hours and mismatched serials, to hydraulically stressed machines masked for a brief demonstration video - a "cheap, low hour" machine quickly becomes expensive if you can't see the entire story behind the photographs. The consequences can range from costly downtime and endless delays to a complete write-off, the kind of pain that gets the customer to start "hiding" when you pick up the phone.
Instead of leveraging these buyer fears, we eliminate them with process. Since a compromised hydraulic system and inaccurate hours are the two failure modes that most frighten overseas buyers, each machine we offer undergoes a 120-point inspection process that includes validating hours against the engine control unit (not just the dash display), and we send a date-stamped photo and video package plus the complete inspection report, before the buyer commits a deposit. This isn't buying used equipment; it's avoiding a gamble.

Which ZAXIS fits your job?
You can't select an excavator by its weight class alone; you start by understanding dig requirements, transport logistics and likely available container/vessel space-the machine is chosen after that. This table maps that decision process, reflecting how our engineers assist buyers on an individual basis.
| If your priority is… | Dig depth target | Transport reality | Recommended model |
|---|---|---|---|
| Access & landscaping | ~3.5–4.0 m | Fits a flat-rack; light haul | ZX70 |
| Mixed site / trenching | ~5.5 m | Flat-rack or RoRo | ZX120 |
| Sustained earthmoving | ~6.7 m | RoRo / breakbulk | ZX200 / ZX210 / ZX240 |
| Quarry / mining output | ~7.3 m | RoRo / breakbulk, arm removed | ZX350 / ZX360 |
On the lifespan question, buyers always ask: A well maintained Hitachi like an EX120-5 or a ZAXIS model should be good for well over 20,000 hours of life with basic attention paid to the chains, sprockets and idlers. Anything over about 7,000 hours is definitely considered "higher usage” and needs to be priced as such. You get the real hours, so you can do the math.
Buyer Advisory — match the bucket to the job, not just the machine
A ZX350 lacking the proper digging bucket, quick coupler, or hydraulic thumb is a machine half purchased. Make sure the accessories like tooth bucket, grouser track shoes, rubber tracks, or a backfill blade are all specified at quote time so the unit can start earning immediately on arrival. All accessories are listed on each individual machine and a hydraulic quick coupler can be added at loading time.
China Exporter vs Domestic Dealer vs Auction — Compare the Landed Cost, Not the Sticker
The question “is it really cheaper?” has a valid answer and it all boils down to landed cost, not the upfront asking price. Importers can make the fatal mistake of comparing a China FOB price against a US dealer's “all in” landed cost. Side by side, it is apples to apples. Here’s how it all lines up.

Two important points should be taken into account that undermine the “China is actually quite expensive” argument. Firstly, for most destinations, the duties on self-propelled excavators are nominal to non-existent - as one importer put it bluntly, “ there is no import duty on excavators, which is a bonus.” Secondly, in reality, all-in costs are often not as high as many buyers expect: one actual transaction of a compact China machine shipped to Norway arrived landed, inclusive of taxes, freight and duties, for just over USD 6,400. Duty levels and freight charges do vary by country and model so these figures are guides only - we can quote on your exact lane.
That sum — not the unit price — is the number that decides whether a used Hitachi excavator from China beats your domestic option. We build it with you line by line. Duty/freight figures are destination-specific and quoted per shipment. When multiple machines are being shipped by distributors, our advantages increase sharply - our sourcing prices can decrease with scale, the per-machine costs of containers and vessels go down, and one set of paperwork covers the order for the whole shipment. This is when China direct transitions from a potentially risky move into a sound margin play - and the procurement module below is designed to help you make that move.
How We Inspect & Refurbish Every Hitachi Excavator
This module is essential and for many buyers should be read twice as it ranks condition “all important”, more than price, for importers. Sellers commonly fall short of expectation by failing to disclose the critical hidden problems - such as worn out pumps, cracking booms, final drives that have had their day - that do not always show up on a ‘hero shot.’ We prefer the opposite approach; we surface and disclose them.
The 120-point pre-shipment inspection
Every machine is examined through a range of critical systems, including:
- Hours and identity - the machine’s operating hours will be confirmed against the dash reading and electronically stored information (engine controller, hydraulic controller), and the serial number will be matched against its papers to confirm no meters have been wound back.
- Hydraulics - the main pump’s pressure and output will be tested under load, boom, arm and bucket cylinders will be checked for any drift and seal leaks, and the hydraulic functions including auxiliary circuits and quick coupler will be cycled.
- Undercarriage - the condition of track chains, sprockets, idlers, rollers and any grouser track shoes will be assessed, and a wear percentage report provided (likely the single most expensive element of a used excavator to get wrong).
- Engine - Cold start, smoke test, condition of oil and coolant, check blow by, fluid analysis as hours dictate.
- Structure and Cab - Inspection of Boom and Arm weld integrity, check straightness of Frame, condition of Cab, AC, glass, and function of Rearview Camera.
"We don't trust a dash meter on its own - we've seen too many wound back. Every ZAXIS we ship gets its hours read off the controller and matched to the service history before it earns a clean report. If the undercarriage is past 70 percent worn, that goes on the report too, not into the fine print."
Refurbishment to a documented standard
Post inspection machines are cleaned, fluids and filters are changed, wear items replaced, hydraulic leaks repaired, and paint work touched up as needed - and then retested. You receive the ‘before and after’ report not an amorphous ‘fully refurbished’ description. Where a buyer prefers to have this verified Independently we welcome third party inspection (SGS or your own Surveyor) at the yard prior to loading.
Export Procurement Guide — Pricing Factors, MOQ, Container Loading & Lead Time
This section is for the procurement desk - how our pricing is put together, how the machines are loaded, what paperwork you receive and how long everything takes. We quote firm prices per machine per lane and explain here what determines those prices to prevent nasty surprises.
What drives your FOB price
Instead of the cheap, fake ‘From $X’ banner on websites, we set out here the real drivers of a FOB price quote. Tell us what price range you want to operate in against these and we will quote a firm price:
- Model & Tonnage - a ZX70 mini and a ZX350 heavy crawler is quite a different class of machine.
- Operating Hours & Year - low verified hours (hrs) and newer year (e.g. 2019 versus 2015) justifies higher price points.
- Undercarriage and Hydraulic Condition - inspection finding dictates the price band.
- Attachments - bucket, thumb, quick coupler and blade will add cost to the purchase but mean the machine arrives ready for work.
- Order Volume - one machine versus a distributors' entire consignment will influence the price per machine.
Send us your required model, operating hours and destination, and we'll send back a firm FOB quote plus a lead-time estimate.
Container loading — what actually fits
This is where first time importers lose money, so let’s be blunt. Sub-5tonne machines fit in a 40ft HC closed top container; all 7tonne plus machines we sell fit in a flat rack, RoRo, or break bulk ship - for the heavier machines this involves removal of counterweight or boom.
Documents & lead time
With any FOB or CIF order you receive the full export package - Commercial Invoice, Packing List, Bill of Lading, Certificate of Origin, Photographs of loading and if required for your destination - Fumigation Certificate, plus the inspection report. The self propelled excavator is typically HS code 8429.52. Regarding lead times, be realistic; preparation of the machine prior to loading usually takes 2 to 4 weeks followed by transit time per lane. Delays come from sellers who skip the paperwork, not from the ocean.
Buyer Advisory — confirm EPA / emissions compliance for your market
If you’re importing into the US or EU, the engine must meet the emissions tier for its model year (US EPA Tier; EU Stage/CE). This is the quiet reason shipments get held up, so we confirm model-year compliance against your destination before you place your order - not after the machine is on the water.

Used Hitachi Excavator Export — FAQ
01
Are used Hitachi ZAXIS excavators reliable enough to export and run hard?
Yes. The ZAXIS line is among the most durable Japanese hydraulic excavators, and with routine maintenance these machines run well past 20,000 hours. The risk isn't the brand - it's an unverified individual machine, which is exactly what our inspection removes.
02
How do you verify the real operating hours before shipment?
We read hours from the engine/hydraulic controller, not just the dash meter, and match the serial number to the service documents. A wound-back meter is the most common used-excavator fraud, so we cross-check it on every unit and put the result in the report.
03
Can I appoint my own third-party inspector, like SGS, before loading?
Absolutely — send SGS or your own surveyor to our yard before loading.
04
How many used excavators fit in a container?
Sub-5-tonne minis fit 2-3 in a 40ft high-cube. The ZX70 and larger machines we stock ship on flat-racks, RoRo, or breakbulk - one machine per flat-rack - because they're too tall and heavy to stand inside a closed box.
05
What documents do you provide for customs clearance?
Commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, and certificate of origin form the core pack, plus dated loading photos and — where your destination requires it — a fumigation certificate, all bundled with the machine's full inspection report. Your bill of lading is the title document, and the certificate of origin sets your duty treatment, so both have to be exact. The self-propelled excavator HS code is generally 8429.52, which we confirm against your customs broker before shipment.
06
Will the engine pass EPA or EU emissions rules in my country?
For the US and EU, the engine must meet the emissions tier for its model year. We confirm model-year compliance against your destination before you order, so the machine doesn't get held at the border.
07
What is the lead time from payment to delivery at my port?
Machine prep to loading is typically two to four weeks, then sea transit depends on your lane - often about a month door-to-port for a clean order. Delays almost always come from missing documents, which is exactly what our export pack prevents.
08
Do you offer any warranty on a used export machine, and what about parts?
Used export machines are sold on a transparent, condition-based basis - we tell you in writing what's covered. For parts, Hitachi's global network covers wear items, pumps, and engines, and we help source common parts so downtime stays short.
09
Do you sell other brands besides Hitachi?
Yes. In addition to Hitachi, we export a range of inspected, used Komatsu, Caterpillar, Volvo, Hyundai, Doosan, Kubota, Sany, Yanmar, and Kobelco excavators and attachments to these and many other markets to the same rigorous inspection and documentation standards.
